Amy
Gatzemeyer
TRIBE Yoga Military
From an early age, Amy Gatzemeyer’s dedication to service, community, and country was clear. While at Tulane University, she completed an Honors Thesis that explored the impact of service-learning on active citizenship. Since graduating from Newcomb College in 2006, she stayed true to this passion by exploring service learning and active citizenship in her own life and by fostering conditions for others to serve. Immediately following graduation, Amy spent one year teaching middle school in New Orleans during which she implemented a service-learning program. Following that, she served four years as a military intelligence officer in the U.S. Army. She served in Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2009 to 2010, earning a Bronze Star Medal for Service. In 2017, Amy completed her 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training in a special program for cadets, military service members, and veterans at the United States Military Academy (West Point) and immediately followed up by completing an additional 300-hour Yoga Teacher Training. In 2018, during her 300-hour training, she worked with other veterans to create a yoga training program for military members who want to integrate the tools of yoga into their units. This program has since become the 501c(3) organization TRIBE (We Teach Resilience, Increase Balance, and Endurance.) TRIBE’s mission is to teach the tools of yoga—both the physical practice and mindfulness techniques—that align with the military’s culture in order to enhance the resilience, mental and physical endurance and strength, physical vitality, and overall physical readiness of our nation’s active-duty personnel and their families. In addition to being one of the lead trainers and curriculum designers, Amy currently serves as the Administrative and Financial Head of TRIBE. In 2020, Amy mentored a cadet at the United States Military Academy who was researching moral injury and potential roles for yoga and mindfulness in preventing potentially morally injurious situations. This collaboration led to a new self-paced online course that linked TRIBE volunteers and teachers with experts in the field of moral injury from the United States Naval Academy’s Center for Ethical Leadership, Veterans’ Affairs, Georgetown University, and the United States Military Academy. This course has been presented to military units in training and was available to individuals assisting in the Afghan refugee crisis in 2021 and the Ukrainian refugee crisis in 2022. In a return to her original passion, Amy learned through the creation of this course that service to one’s community is a key indicator in recovery from moral injury. As such, she continues to work with TRIBE to provide service and personal growth opportunities for others. Above all else, Amy serves a a military spouse and homeschool mom. Currently, she and her family are stationed in Brussels, Belgium. Homeschooling her children from since 2016, Amy ensures that service and commitment to community is a central feature of their educations. While moving every one to three years, she and her children always seek out ways to join church or community volunteer projects to include food kitchens, backpack lunches programs, or refugee support. She regularly organizes and leads homeschool meet-ups and field trips for children and book clubs homeschool parents. Since 2017, she has also been an active Girl Scouts of the USA volunteer as a troop leader and service unit manager.
