New 2025 Updates Strengthen Professional License Portability for Military Spouses
Karla Langham, Chief of Staff at U.S. Department of Labor VETS shares an update on the SCRA amendment:
“In January 2023, Congress introduced a significant amendment to the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA), enabling military spouses to transfer their professional licenses (excluding licenses to practice law) across state lines. This development has been marked by exceptional interagency cooperation to unify messaging for the military spouse community.
That inter-agency collaboration involved the Department of Labor (DOL), Department of Defense (DOD), and led by Department of Justice (DOJ). Recently, the DOJ released details outlining their commitment to assisting both states and military spouses in implementing the new legislation.
Under the newly enacted SCRA license portability provision, servicemembers and military spouses stationed in a new state can have their out-of-state licenses recognized as valid, subject to specific requirements. These requirements are provided as an attachment for reference.”
